Caterpillar’s new 336 hydraulic excavator is an 81,200-pound (36,800-kilogram) model with a maximum digging depth of 24.67 feet (7.51 meters). The manufacturer says it supplies strong digging force and swing torque along with reliable operation.

“Our new Cat 336 model delivers the right balance of power and payload,” says Caterpillar Global Product Manager for Large Hydraulic Excavators, Brian Abbott. “The result is a rugged and reliable machine that delivers excellent production along with low owning and operating costs.”

Weighing, Grade Assist Standard

The Cat 336 has a maximum reach of 36.25 ft (11 m) at ground level and a max loading height of 23.25 ft (7 m). Its bucket penetration and lift capacity can both increase by 8% with automatic dig boost and auto heavy lift systems. Cat Lift Assist helps operators prevent tipping the excavator.

Among the 336’s standard features are the Cat Payload onboard weighing system, Grade Assist, and 2D Grade with depth and slope indication. All Cat Grade systems support radios and base stations from major third-party suppliers. The excavator can save up to four depth and slope offsets, allowing rapid grading without the need for a checker.

When using a hydraulic hammer attachment, an auto hammer stop system seeks to avert damage caused by overuse. The system alerts the operator after 15 seconds of continuous firing, and shuts the hammer off after 30 seconds.

Lower Maintenance Costs

A 302-horsepower (225-kilowatt) Cat C7.1 engine drives the 336. It has three power modes to tilt its priority from performance to fuel economy. An efficient hydraulic radiator fan with optional automatic reverse helps with the latter.

The motor can start up at temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius), while the hydraulic system benefits from an automatic warmup feature in cold weather to avoid damage and allow work to commence more quickly. The excavator is also rated for operation in temperatures of up to 125 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius) and at altitudes of up to 14,764 ft (4,500 m) above sea level.

Cat says that maintenance costs for the new 336 (including parts and labor) are less than those of its 336F Series excavator. The machine’s engine oil and fuel filters both have service intervals of 1,000 hours.

State-Of-The-Art Technology

In the Next Generation cab, a heated and ventilated air suspension seat is available with the top trim level. The left console tilts up for easier entry and exit, and an optional Cat Stick Steer feature assists in traveling and turning with the machine.

A jog dial navigates both the excavator’s controls and the operator’s manual on a touchscreen monitor. The 336 has standard keyless pushbutton start with an optional Bluetooth key fob. An Operator ID passcode gatekeeps access to engine startup as well as individual operator control setting preferences.

Cat’s Product Link telematics system makes machine status and usage data accessible wirelessly. Product Link also allows remote fault code diagnosis, operating software updates, and more.
