Sandhills Publishing Hosts IT Open House On Lincoln Campus

LINCOLN, Nebraska — October 21, 2014

Over 100 Lincoln-area students and professionals convened on Sandhills Publishing’s campus headquarters last Wednesday for an open house. The event exposed students to opportunities available in the computer science and computer engineering fields while outlining the company’s approach to software and systems development as well as the resources available to IT teams within the company. The IT open house comes as Sandhills begins construction on an additional IT facility on its 68-acre main campus, which started earlier this month.

"Our primary goal was to expose local students to the exciting opportunities available at Sandhills," explains Human Resources Manager Monica Siebrandt. Students were invited to attend presentations covering a variety of topics related to software and application development ranging from internal systems to the unique cloud-based software solutions developed in-house by Sandhills’ IT teams. "The open house allowed students to tour our campus and see our facilities as well as the technologies we’re working with, both software and hardware," explains Sandhills’ Chief Information Officer Scott McKinney. Students had a chance to get an up-close look at the on-site server farms housed in an underground, restricted-access, tornado-proof room. The servers function in tandem with those housed in the Scottsdale Data Center to ensure that Sandhills can meet the needs of its more than 12,300 customers around the world. Presenters also demoed up-and-coming projects, and were available for questions, giving students the opportunity to learn more about what’s on the horizon as Sandhills continues to grow.

System Application Specialist Natasha Jahnke, who started with Sandhills as a systems intern last year, gave students an overview of the company’s uniquely hands-on internship program. "Speaking about the program from a firsthand perspective shows students the kind of progress an intern can make within the company," she explains. "Our internship program is a great way to gain experience and it opens doors to full-time opportunities after graduation," she notes.

Sandhills will continue to engage the industry’s top talent, hosting similar events in the future as the company expands.
